If you’re looking for something more decorative than plain concrete but less expensive than brick or stone, stamped concrete is a happy medium. Stamped concrete is designed to mimic materials like stone, brick, slate, tile or wood. It is made by coloring regular concrete and then stamping it with a pattern.

Stamped concrete is a popular choice with homeowners, whether for a front patio, back patio or pool surround. Some early versions were considered unattractive, but the product has come a long way. Upgrades to the texture and pigments have made stamped concrete a very close second to concrete pavers, natural stone or brick.

Stamped Concrete Patio Prices

Stamped concrete patios start at about $6 to $10 per square foot, compared to about $2 to $5 for a plain concrete slab. At that price point, you can expect a fairly basic design. Stamped concrete patios with more elaborate designs, or those that require custom work or hand-application techniques, cost about $10 to $15 per square foot.

Average Stamped Concrete Patio Prices

  • For a 12X12-foot patio, the cost for a basic design works out to about $850 to $1,500. For a more advanced design with custom work, budget closer to $1,500 to $2,200.
  • A 15X20-foot patio with a basic design might cost $1,800 to $3,000. With custom work, it might cost $3,000 to $4,500.

Stamped Concrete Patio Pros and Cons

As with all products, stamped concrete has its pros and cons. It is attractive, durable and long-lasting. It is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, including custom colors and patterns. Also, stamped concrete tends to be less expensive than concrete pavers or products like natural stone.

On the downside, concrete will crack eventually, and it requires periodic resealing. Over time, the color will fade. Also, it is a difficult DIY project.
