Artificial turf, a synthetic grass, was created for use in sports arenas. It first became a household term in 1960, when it was used in Houston’s Astrodome. However, recently it has grown in popularity for residential and commercial lawns.

Many people have a negative impression of artificial turf because early versions were cheap and plastic-looking. However, the product has come a long way in the last few decades. Modern artificial turf is nearly indistinguishable from real grass.

Artificial turf is considerably more expensive than real grass, but it requires very little maintenance. There’s never a need for seeding, mowing or watering. It is also extremely durable, standing up to high traffic and heavy use.

Cost of Artificial Turf

Artificial turf is an expensive product. For materials alone, budget about $4 to $10 per square foot, with prices varying based on the quality of the turf. For a small lawn of 5,000 square feet, that works out to $20,000 to $50,000. For a 10,000-square-foot lawn, the cost for materials would be $40,000 to $100,000. Professional installation usually adds about $3 to $5 per square foot, bringing the total cost for a 5,000-square-foot lawn to $35,000 to $75,000 and the total cost for a 10,000-square-foot lawn to $70,000 to $150,000.

Despite the cost, keep in mind that artificial turf eliminates the need to spend money on a lawn mower, watering and irrigation systems, fertilizer, seed or sod, and weed control. That can add up to hundreds or thousands of dollars per year.

Saving Money on Artificial Turf

With an investment as large as artificial turf, you want to make sure you’re getting the best possible price. Here are some tips for scoring a good deal:

  • Shop around. Seek quotes from multiple installers before hiring one. However, never choose a company on price alone. Do some research to make sure the company is reputable and has favorable reviews or recommendations.
  • Check for rebates offered through your state, city, water company or power company. Because artificial turf does not require watering, rebates are offered for its environmental and money-saving effects.
  • Consider the increase in property value that often comes with installing artificial turf. Talk to local real estate agents to find out how much of an impact artificial grass will have. In some areas, the investment may nearly pay for itself when you sell the house. In other areas, the impact may be minor.
